This was an ekphrastic poem based on the 2020 Marin County Fair poster by Tricia George. I’d originally planned on exhibiting it and a few other poems at the fair. Since the fair has been cancelled, I decided to just post it here.
The Flight of a Lifetime On the way to the county fair, Hamster stowed himself away. Waiting for the perfect moment, he foraged on fried goods for days. On the morning of the auction, he snuck into the animal pens, unlocking every lock and gate, freeing goats, cows, and chickens. A dinner plate was not their fate. Chickadee prepared for weeks, studying old flight manuals. She hopped onto the aeroplane followed closely by the rabbit. Freedom coursed through their veins. This year they had had it! They started up the engine, as Hamster played his fiddle. Pies and jam flew everywhere as Goat and Cow raced beside. “Hop in!” chirped Chickadee. With a thump they both complied. Far above the carnival they flew beyond bedazzled racing piglets and into those bright blue skies. As Rooster crowed upon the wing, they all waved a cheerful goodbye.
