The Gulls There are moments in the calm of the morning before we dive into the newspapers, granting a brief respite from the grief that swallows us whole over the multitude of events we cannot control. This momentary amnesia allows us to forget and regain our strength for the hard days ahead. As the gulls cry out their solos in the distance backed by a chorus of cars on the freeway, if you close your eyes you can almost picture the ocean and the dance of its steady heartbeat of frothy waves. Some days the darkness inevitably clouds our eyes as the world continues to turn itself inside out despite our best efforts to turn it all around, and legendary lives pass on to the realm of memory. It is on days like these that we need these moments most. Little sparks of light to counterbalance an infinite dark. So I thank these soaring, singing seagulls for being a vessel that transported my soul to peaceful days where I danced upon glistening shores. I can almost feel the wet sand between my toes.
